Music Palooza Alive & Well!

Plant #1 Humming

Plant #1 was humming on 22/23 July as punters crowded into the old factory site looking for bargains, good buys, the unusual, hidden gems and the latest on vinyl.  The weather was cool and without rancour.  On Saturday the swelling crowds kept sellers busy throughout the day.  There was no rest on Sunday and buyers kept coming through the doors consistently.

At White Elephant punters were lined up at closing time on Sunday seeking the last of the good vinyl on offer.  Overall the fair was very good one of the best over the past few years.  Jon from Revolve Records always does well and although there were a few significant absences, notably the Vinyl Junkie from Byron Bay, there were many sellers with good stock, including Heartland Records, JJ’s Vinyl, Clarity Records, the dark side Squirrell Gripp Records, Rerun, and the local stalwarts.  You know who they are.

So sales were up and there was also plenty of good booty to be found, if you had the time and dedication to look.  And that is part and parcel of “crate-digging” as we know it.  Get those hands dirty!  And at White Elephant we found some beauties.

Sales Up & Gems Galore

Four purchases of new vinyl are stand-outs:

David Gilmours’ 2006 release – On an Island in a beautiful heavy issue gatefold cover

Led Zeppelin’s In through the out door – remastered on 180g vinyl

Marianne Faithfull’s – Record Store day Release – Rich Kid Blues

Nuggets – Come to the Sunshine – double album on golden vinyl – also a Record Store Day release

Jazztopia

And to top it off there were a number of jazz albums of great interest, including, an eleven volume set of Duke Ellington (all double albums) – “his recorded works in chronological order” – from 1925 through 1938, and an original release of Leonard Feather’s four volumes of The Encyclopedia of jazz on Records – all albums in near mint condition.  Three other gems include two hard to find albums by Deodato and one obscure beauty by Carmen McRae.  The music from these gems will be played on Radio Adelaide’s jazz programs – check out Primetime Jazz on a Thursday evening or Sunday Jazz Cafe at 10:30 in the morning easing you into a cool mood for the rest of the day.

All in all Music Palooza was very successful from a buying and selling perspective, and Craig and Belinda, our friendly organisers, deserve hearty congratulations for a job well done.  Rumour has it that next year there will probably be a new venue as Plant #1 is scheduled for demolition.  Remember you heard it here first.  Hang Loose.
